Paul Comolera, French (1818-1897), was renowned for his work as an expert animalier, modeling naturalistic, life-sized animals and, more specifically, birds. His studio has been likened to a menagerie of birds, fish and reptiles from which he drew inspiration.

For another of this model see M.G. Karmason with J. Stacke, Majolica, A Complete History and Illustrated Survey, New York, 1989, p. 55 (the image inverted). Also see Bonham's, London, 5 October 2004, lot 25 for the example from the Minton Museum.
