He had been deeply interested in numismatics and antiquities from his youth and would recount how, soon after he had been taken out of school at 16 to learn the family business, had used his very first earnings to buy an ancient coin, to the considerable disapproval of his father. Throughout his collecting life he was known for his scholarship and innate aesthetic appreciation, seeking only the best examples of the most perfect craftsmanship.
