RAFFLES, Thomas Stamford (1781-1826). The History of Java. London: Black, Parbury and Allen; and John Murray, 1817. 2 vols., 4° (268 x 208mm). Two soft-ground etched frontispieces, hand-coloured folding engraved map, 63 engraved or aquatint plates, of which 9 hand-coloured and 1 folding, 2 folding letterpress tables (Abbey counts one of these as a plate), 7 engraved vignettes. (Lacking half-titles, without the advertisements found in the Abbey copy, occasional light browning.) Contemporary calf ,gilt spines with lettering pieces (extremities lightly rubbed, 1 spine label chipped, upper cover to vol. 1 lightly abraded, joints just starting to crack). Provenance: Edward Herbert, second earl of Powis (1785-1848), Roxburghe Club member and president (armorial bookplate).
