AUGUSTE BORGET (Lots 38-42) The following five lots were given by Borget to a friend, from whom they have descended to the present owners. A pupil of Jean-Antoine Gudin and a close friend of Honoré de Balzac, Borget undertook a journey around the world in 1836, travelling through South America and the Pacific before reaching the China coast in August 1838. He painted with Chinnery and William Prinsep in Macao, the latter remarking that he found the Frenchman's portfolio 'rich with scenes from South America, Sandwich Islands and China, and he was a pleasant fellow into the bargain'. In July 1839 Borget visited Manila, then sailed for India via Singapore and the Straits of Malacca, returning to Paris in the summer of 1840. Borget's Fragments d'un voyage autour du monde, illustrated with twelve plates after his drawings, was published a few years after his return.
