THE RARE GASTALDI/RAMUSIO MAP OF INDIA, separately published by Ferrando Bertelli. Gastaldi included the first separate map of the India peninsula in the 1548 Venice edition of Ptolemy's Geografia. Vol. I of the 1554 second edition of Ramusio's Delle navigationi et viaggi contained three woodcut maps, reduced from Gastaldi's large world map of 1548, one being a map of India oriented with south at the top. After a printing-house fire destroyed the blocks soon after Ramusio's death in 1557, the three woodcut maps were replaced by copper engravings which first appeared in the 1563 third edition of vol. I. Then in 1565 Bertelli published new editions of the same three maps as separates. Gole 2; Karrow 30/74.2.
