Hand-coloured additional lithographic title and 12 hand-coloured lithographic views after Charles Bentley, one engraved map outlined in red and blue, 12 wood-engraved illustrations. (Some light scattered spotting.) Original dark-blue leather-backed illustrated boards reproducing the lithographic title (binding loosening, a few leaves and guards detached, lower board with some soiling).
FIRST EDITION. A COLOURED COPY IN THE RARE ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATED BOARDS. As a result of the finely illustrated journey described here, Schomburgk suggested a border between Venezuela and Guiana, sent the Victoria Regia waterlily to England where it caused a sensation, and was awarded the RGS Gold Medal for his scientific work.
