MICROSCOPY -- [ROYAL] MICROSCOPICAL SOCIETY. The Transactions of the Microscopical Society of London [later:] Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science [later:] The Monthly Microscopical Journal: Transactions of the Royal Microscopical Society. London: various publishers, 1844-1877. 36 volumes, 8° (220 x 146mm). Numerous plates, some with partial hand-colouring. (Occasional light spotting.) Various bindings with most in contemporary half leather and 5 vols in original publisher's cloth (spines faded, extremities rubbed and worn, one publisher's cloth headcap torn). Provenance: Edward Heron-Allen (bookplates and stamps).
A VERY SCARCE COMPLETE RUN OF THE MICROSCOPICAL SOCIETY'S FIRST THREE PUBLICATIONS. Heron-Allen evidently had trouble assembling this run; his conventional armorial bookplates, together with the name of his first wife Mariana, dated 1891 adorn four of the later vols, while a similarly orthodox bookplate, this time with second wife's name, Edith, and dated 1925 are in the first three vols. His esoteric bookplate dated 1900 is to be found in the main run of the Quarterly and Monthly. (36)
