These candlesticks were produced during the three years that Morel worked in London (1849-52), when he supplied works to royal and aristocratic patrons including Queen Victoria and the exiled French royal family. The Rothschild/Roseberry collection included a similar pair of silver-gilt and blue enamel candlesticks which sold from Mentmore, 19 May 1977, lot 672. That pair is illustrated in Vanessa Brett, The Sotheby's Directory of Silver, 1986, p. 381, no. 1809.
