QIANLONG UNDERGLAZE BLUE SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1736-95)
Finely potted with gently rounded sides, the interior with a central medallion formed by five bats, wufu, in iron-red, encircled by further bats in the well, the exterior with eight bats above an underglaze blue key-fret band around the foot

Lot Essay

Dishes with this pattern are also found with Yongzheng marks. As the character for 'bat', fu, is a homonym for 'fortune', the combination of five bats provides a rebus not only for vast good fortune but it also represents the Five Blessings of longevity, wealth, health, love of virtue and a peaceful death.
