While the basic shape of the current vase seems to have derived from the classic trumpet-mouth vases of earlier periods, the turned-down mouth may ultimately derive from the vases with lobed turned-down mouths from the 12th and 13th centuries.
The turned-down mouth also appears on blue and white vessels of the Xuande reign, such as the lobed vase in the National Palace Museum collection (see National Palace Museum, Catalogue of the Special Exhibition of Selected Hsüan-te Imperial Porcelains of the Ming Dynasty, Taipei, 1998, pp. 80-81, no.13).
A similarly shaped Qianlong mark and period example in blue and white with turned-down mouth, was sold in these Rooms, 11 July 2006, lot 142
