A Lacquer Writing Box (Suzuribako)
Meiji period (late 19th century)
Rectangular with rounded corners and overhanging lid decorated in gold and silver takamaki-e, hirame and kirigane and inset with gold and silver foil on a fundame ground with a samurai in full armor beneath a cherry tree beside a river, low clouds in the middle distance and a waterfall in the background, the underside of the lid decorated on a nashiji ground with another samurai within a fenced enclosure, the lower tray fitted with writing utensils and an ink stick holder in nashiji cases with silver fittings, a slate inkstone with fundame rim and a gilt-metal waterdropper (suiteki) cast in the form of a pine tree; the ground of the box nashiji and the rims silver
