AN ARMOR FACE MASK (Somen)
Edo period (19th century), SIGNED KASHU JU MYOCHIN MUNEYASU
A russet iron somen with wide open round eyes of silver or silver alloy, the pupils rimmed with shakudo, the forehead and nose detachable, although lacquered in place inside the mask, the brow wrinkled and with curling eyebrows, a large bushy moustache, loose rings on the cheeks for helmet cords, the sage (throat guard) two-tiered with honkozane (individual laced scales)
