Lot Essay

Lamqua, probably to be identified with the artist Guan Zuolin, was the head of a family of Chinese painters whose works were deeply influenced by Western artistic traditions. It seems certain that he was aware of the work of George Chinnery (1774-1852), and according to some sources had worked with Chinnery in Macao (see Patrick Connor, 'Lamqua: Western and Chinese Painter', in Arts of Asia, XXIX, 2, March-April 1999, pp. 46-64).
