The sitter was the eldest son of William Crane of Loughton, Buckinghamshire, and Frances Bond, the adopted co-heir of Sir Francis Crane (1579-1636), the founder and director of the Mortlake Tapestry Factory under the patronage of James I and Charles I and later a Chancellor of the Order of the Garter. See Laurence Martin, Apollo, Sir Francis Crane, February 1981, pp. 90-96.
This portrait, which would appear to date from the early 1650s is characteristic of Lely's early portraiture.
