Carelli took his first painting lessons from his father Raffaele.
Originally from the Italian region of Puglia, Carelli went on to win two gold medals in the Neapolitan exhibitions of 1830 and 1833. These were early affirmations of the artist's talent and earned him a scholarship to Rome in 1837. The patronage of the Queen of Naples took him to Paris, where he was awarded gold medals at the Salon in 1842, 1843 and 1844.
