SIGNED SHINPU JONAN (NI) OITE SHUNKOSAI YOSHITAKA, EDO PERIOD (19TH CENTURY)
The fine handachi daisho set with brown ishimeji lacquer scabbards, metal fittings of shakudo with waves and inlaid gold spray,the fuchigashira of each with shakudo and gold-inlaid mokko mon and seal character 'Ei', both fuchi signed Shunkosai Yoshitaka, the katana blade honzukuri, the kitae itame nagare, the hamon gunome with togari-ba, the boshi yakitsume, with signature Kanemoto, Mino province Muromachi period 16th century, length 70.6cm, the wakizashi blade honzukuri, koshizori curve, the kitae itame, the hamon konotare of nie, the boshi komaru, with signature Masatsune, Muromachi period 15th-16th century, length 42.2cm (2)

Lot Essay

The metal fittings on this daisho are complete and matching, and are signed by the maker, who is thought to have worked during the early part of the 19th century. Both fuchi are signed Shinpu Jonan (ni) oite Shunkosai Yoshitaka (Yoshitaka - art name Shunkosai, at Jonan 'south of the castle' in Shinano province). The artist is little known, but a tsuba of shakudo also carved with waves illustrating the battle of Yashima may be found illustrated in the Red Cross catalogue (pp.CXLVI), the Baur catalogue (no.727), and the JC Hawkshaw Collection no. 2946 (Robert E. Haynes, The Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists, Ellwangen, 2004).
