The fine koshirae of gold migakiji lacquer with chrysanthemum mon in mother-of-pearl inlay with foliage in gold takamaki-e, silver and gilt matching fittings of migakiji, the fuchi with raised chrysanthemum petals, the menuki of silver chrysanthemum mon, the hilt having rows of five decorative silver gilt tawara-byo on either side

Lot Essay

The hosodachi mounting, also sometimes called efu-dachi, originated as formal court wear. Later pieces such as this were usually made for special presentation purposes.
