At the beginning of his painting career, Romanian born Segal was a follower of impressionism and neo-impressionism. In this period he was influenced above all by Van Gogh and, as is evident in The red roof, by pointillism. The subject of red-roofed houses is one that the artist remained faithful to throughout the next ten years, including Red houses, now in the Ascona Museum, Switzerland, which he painted while living there (1914-20) and frequenting the avant-garde Monte Verità colony. Segal's work can also be found in the collections of the Los Angelese County Museum of Art, Tate Britain and the Jüdisches Museum, Berlin.
