The trade routes travelled by the East India Companies between Europe, the Indian sub-continent and south-east Asia resulted in a great deal of artistic fluidity, making it difficult to provide an attribution for the present lot to a particular centre. However the existence of another filigree mounted rhinoceros-horn cup in the Padua Ramos collection, which was mounted in Goa (Exotica - The Portuguese Discoveries and the Renaissance Kunstkammer, Lisbon, 2001, p.166-167, no. 58) suggests a similar origin for the present cup. While the Padua Ramos cup is mounted foot and rim and also has handles it, like the present example, has a distinctive beaded filigree foot.
