Lot Essay

The Naval Brigade fleet was sent to Alexandria in 1882 under Admiral Sir Frederick Beauchamp Seymour. The British fleet bombarded Alexandria heavily from July 11-13, 1882 in response to riots which had led to the death of 50 Europeans. This led to war being declared by the Egyptian rebel officer Urabi Pasha on Great Britain. In August British forces invaded the Suez Canal zone. Urabi Pasha's forces were defeated at the Battle of Tel el-Kebir on September 13, 1882. Urabi was exiled to Ceylon and the Khedive's authority restored.
