A GEORGE V SILVER-MOUNTED TROWEL
MARK OF ATKIN BROTHERS, SHEFFIELD, 1928
The blade with a part-fluted turned ivory handle, engraved on the front with a depiction of Peterborough New Town Hall, the back engraved with a coat-of-arms and an inscription, marked on the back, the back further engraved 'Barton Clark & Co. Peterborough', contained in a fitted case
12 1/8 in. (31 cm.) long
The arms are those of Peterborough.

The inscription reads 'THIS TROWEL WAS USED BY H.R.H. PRINCE GEORGE IN LAYING THE FOUNDATION STONE OF THE NEW TOWN HALL AND MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS AT PETERBOROUGH ON THE 28th DAY OF JUNE 1929 E. BERRY WEBBER, A.R.I.B.A..'

Presented to Prince George, Duke of Kent (1902-1942) to commemorated the laying of the foundation stone of the new Peterborough Town Hall.

Lot Essay

The new town hall was to serve the expanding population of a city which had grown five-fold following the redrawing of the city boundaries. The Duke referred to this in his speech and made note of the long history of the municipality. He toured the Cathedral and in contrast also visited the new power station and hospital.
