The shaped blade engraved with an initial 'M' within an oak garter and below a Royal duchess' coronet, the back engraved with an inscription, marked on back of handle
13¾ in. (35 cm.) long
The initial is that of Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent (1906-1968).

The inscription reads 'Presented by the Gas Light and Coke Company to H.R.H. the Duchess of Kent on the occasion of the laying of the foundation stone of the Welfare Centre at the Tar and Ammonia Products Works, Beckton: 4th November 1948'.

The Beckton Works were reputed to be world's largest gas works and had been badly damaged during the War. The Welfare Centre was part of the post-war rebuilding and Princess Marina laid its foundation stone having switched on the third of five planned batteries that would consume over 5,000 tons of coal a day.
