The British steamer Cornwall was built for the Great Western Steamship Line of Bristol by Richardson, Duck & Co. at Stockton, England, in 1873. Designed for their North Atlantic passenger service, Cornwall was registered at 1,872 tons gross (1,205 net) and measured 280 feet in length with a 35 foot beam. A single-screw steamer capable of 10 knots, she carried accommodation for 34 First, 99 intermediate and 122 Third class passengers and soon settled into regular scheduled sailings between Bristol and New York. Withdrawn from that route in June 1885, the company then sold her to Turkish owners who renamed her Hassan Pasha and put her to work in the eastern Mediterranean for the rest of her days.
