The Collection of the Late Christopher Wood Christie's South Kensington is proud to present the Collection of the late Christopher Wood (1941-2009). Educated at Sedburgh and St. John's College, Cambridge, Christopher Wood became a leading scholar and dealer in Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite art, reviving critical and specialized interest in this area of British Art History. In 1963 he joined Christie's, launching specialized Victorian Picture sales in July 1968. A respected Director of the company, he left Christie's in 1977 to run his own private business advising and dealing in Victorian and Pre-Raphaelite art, gothic revival furniture and decorative arts. Christopher Wood was a renowned broadcaster and lecturer appearing regularly on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow. In his dynamic career he found time to write twelve books, including, Dictionary of Victorian Painters, Victorian Painting, The Pre-Raphaelites, The Great Art Boom, 1970-1997 , and his lastest book, William Powell Frith (1819-1909) - A Painter and his World, published in October 2006. Christopher Wood's interests were broad ranging, encompassing all aspects of the fine and decorative arts of the second half of the 19th century - he once commented "Pugin and William Morris are my twin Gods". He also had a framed quotation by one J. Beavington Atkinson, published in the Art Journal of 1867: "I can scarcely imagine a task more agreeable for a gentleman of means, taste and leisure than to set himself to the consistent decoration and furnishing of a Gothic villa". In the early 1980s, he set about doing just that - furnishing his own 'Gothic Villa'. He lovingly restored a schoolhouse in Somerset built in 1857 and decorated the interior in the Gothic taste with romantic and rich colours alongside strong architectural lines. Christopher Wood's name became synonymous with discernment and quality and the property offered here, removed from his Somerset home, is a testament to his informed eye.
