Lot Essay

The shell-bearing eagle derives in part from Thomas Chippendale's 'Modern' or picturesque 'Bracket' pattern with an exotic bird perched amongst flowered, scalloped and water-dripped acanthus scrolls (see Thomas Chippendale, The Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1754, pl.132). A related 'Chippendale' bracket is at Blair Castle, Scotland (see R. Edwards, Shorter Dictionary of English Furniture, London, 1964, p.70, fig.70).
