This table is of identical to one supplied by Gillows for Hackwood and also inscribed R. Wilcock, invoiced to Lord Bolton in July 1813 for £5 5s. It was sold from the Hackwood house sale, 20-22 April 1998, lot 370 (£14,950).

Richard Wilcock is recorded working for Gillows in Lancaster between 1806 and 1817 (C. Gilbert and G. Beard, eds., The Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, Leeds, 1986, p. 973). Four Pembroke tables of this model are listed in Gillows' Memorandum of May 1813 made out for Lord Bolton for furnishings at Hackwood, Hampshire (Hampshire RO: bundle 11M 49/468 I). The inventory mark on the drawer confirms that this table is the one supplied for the North Bedroom. The Pembroke table sold at the Hackwood house sale in 1998 was invoiced by Gillows as follows:
Gillows Bill, July 1813: 'To a good Mahogany Pembroke Table on turnd Reeded legs and Castors, top ends of legs panelled 2ft 6 by 3ft 6'. Invoiced for £5 5s.

This pattern of Pembroke table relates to one in Gillows' General Sketch Book, 344 144, p. 11. This in turn relates to tables supplied in 1811 for Tatton Park, Cheshire (N. Goodison and J. Hardy, 'Gillows at Tatton Park', Furniture History, 1970, pp. 28, 30, 32 and 35, pl. 16b).
