The shaped reeded and rosette-carved padded back, scrolled leaf-carved sides bolsters and seat upholstered in oatmeal covers above a reeded front rail and sabre legs with brass paw caps and castors

The couch, with 'Apollonian' sunflowered and lyre-scrolled arms, relates to an elegant pattern for a 'Grecian sofa the squab, etc. French stuffed with bolsters and cushions,' issued in R. Ackermann, The Repository of Arts, 1811. With its Egyptian reeded and palm-wrapped frame and its arms 'hollowed' for bolsters, it relates in particular to the Edinburgh cabinet-maker William Trotter's 'Grecian Sofas' supplied in 1814 for the Library at Paxton, Scotland (F. Bamford, A Dictionary of Edinburgh Furniture Makers, Leeds, 1983, pl. 52A).
