Mr. H.J. van Ogtrop was a successful stockbroker born and educated in Amsterdam. From 1903 until 1914 he was a boardmember of the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. When he was in Paris for business he met Isaac Israels who lived in Paris between 1905 and 1913. Israels depicted the successful banker in 1906. The art-historian Albert Plasschaert wrote in 1929 about portraits of Israels and had the present lot illustrated with his text. He wrote: "Het werk van Isaac Israels, zijn portret, is dadelijk juist naar het leven; het bereikt het leven in één sprong, of het moet herbeginnen; doorgaan op iets is deze kunst vreemd. Het is geen kunst van diepzinnig overleg noch van langen duur; het is een kunst met de bekoring van een bloem aan zich. Dit is niet weinig; ik kan dat, en ik wil dat niet onderschatten; ik ben zelf te verzot op het leven en te verzot op de bloem.
