Details
ANNUNCIATION, miniature on a leaf from a Book of Hours, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
[Bruges, 1430s]
154 x 108mm (vellum border added on three sides, 190 x 125mm overall). Arch-topped miniature with full-page border, verso blank (cropped at left edge, some rubbing with small pigment losses, crease across left margin and into miniature).

The composition and style of this miniature are characteristic of the most accomplished works of the Masters of the Gold Scrolls. This was the dominant style of manuscript illumination in Bruges from 1410 to 1450. Painted on a single leaf, as was usual in Books of Hours produced in Bruges, this miniature would have been inserted at the opening of matins in the Hours of the Virgin.
