HAGADDAH -- Seder Hagaddah shel Pesach, in Hebrew and Italian, printed in Hebrew characters. Venice: Vendramin, 1740.

2° (352 x 240mm). Title printed in red and black, specially trimmed and mounted within decorative frame, 3 pages with 13, 10 and 6 woodcut scenes (some repeated) respectively, a further 36 woodcut scenes, 27 smaller woodcut figures, 24 woodcut historiated initials, 3 smaller text woodcuts, woodcut architectural border to each page, ALL WITH CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOURING, THE INITIALS IN GOLD AND SILVER, the Seder page dyed yellow. (Neat tears in several leaves, a few repaired, 2 leaves guarded, some staining, gold and silver oxidised.) Contemporary gold flexible paper boards elaborately tooled to a scrolling foliate design incorporating imperial motifs, Hapsburg arms as Holy Roman Emperor at centre (somewhat worn, arms on rear cover indistinct). Provenance: Hapsburg family (binding) -- "EDV" (woodcut initials mounted on title verso).

DE LUXE COPY, FULLY COLOURED, ILLUMINATED AND BOUND FOR HAPSBURG NOBILITY. Christian ownership of this Hagaddah highlights its accessibilty via Judeo-Italian translation (printed in Hebrew characters) and its famous series of charming woodcuts depicting The Passover ritual, holiday preparations, etc., which had previously appeared in 1609 and 1629 editions.
