Lot Essay

The original 1845 model for the present candelabra was considered a failure given the lengthy period of time in which the cast remained active with Association Martin-Barye. It is possible that the overall design may be blamed, being conceived well in advance of the Art Nouveau movement which would have embraced and even championed the model for its fluid plant forms (see Poletti & Richarme, Barye: Catalogue raisonn des sculptures, 2000, p. 377).
