Lot Essay

This tapestry depicts Constantine the Great (280 - 337 AD) defeating the Emperor Maxentius at the battle of the Milvian bridge on the Tiber in 312. On the eve of the battle Constantine saw in a dream a cross in the sky and heard a voice crying 'in hoc signo Vinces' (in this sign, conquer).

A fragmentary tapestry of identical design was sold anonymously, Christie's, London, 11 May 2000, lot 193.
