Lot Essay

Resplendent in nearly complete, original condition, this magnificent rug demonstrates the beauty of color, quality and design of 17th century Isfahan carpets. The small format and drawing is closely related to that of lot 206 with a central lozenge created by opposing palmettes and cloud bands. Here, the design is simplified by eliminating some elements in both the field and borders, thus allowing us to appreciate the claret field and the details of the individual palmettes, rosettes, cloud bands and vinery. In both lots, the ends display embellished silk brocading, that is probably original, further enhancing the high quality of the pieces.
