The hinged top with a central inlaid vase of flowers and birds framed by scrolling leaf inlay opening to a geometric inlaid fitted interior of three drawers, above a central cabinet door flanked by two drawers, the sides similarly decorated, the back with scrolling marquetry on a fruitwood ground, restorations and replacements to marquetry and interior drawers replaced

Lot Essay

The intensely naturalistic style of marquetry on this desk, clearly influenced by Flemish still-life painting, was one of the principal characteristics of Parisian ébénisterie in the last three decades of the seventeenth century. The foremost practitioner of this style was the Dutch-born Pierre Gole (c. 1620-1685), who was appointed 'maître menuisier en ébéne ordinaire du roi' in 1656. His furniture frequently features lush flower-filled vases surrounded by dense scrolling floral vinery on the top and tied floral sprays to the drawer fronts. A closely related bureau attributed to Gole with this marquetry as well as pewter inlay to the base, is illustrated in T.H.Lunsingh Scheurleer, Pierre Gole Ébéniste de Louis XIV, Dijon, 2005, pp.198-99, figs, 153-155.
