A SELECTION OF FINE SPIRITS

Following on from our highly successful inaugural offering of spirits at Christie's in New York in December 2007, we are now delighted to have consigned for your bidding pleasure a second curated section of spirits, sourced from a wide variety of well-respected sources.

We begin the section with a fantastic consignment delivered directly from Bowmore, the first Islay distillery. Called 'The Bowmore Trilogy', the three-bottle lot includes Bowmore Gold, recently released from the distillery and appearing for the first time in the United States at auction.

Following on immediately after, we have 30 lots from the cellars of the Park Avenue Liquor Shop, arguable the nation's leading spirits retailer. A ceaseless promoter and stockholder of the very best from spirits producers across the globe, the Park Avenue Liquor selection features a enticing variety for the connoisseur, including a focus on the very best from the world of Scotch whisky.

We then move on to a smattering of other cognac and calvados consignments sourced from other American collections, before offering other rare Scotch whiskies consigned from a leading Manhattan collector. We finish with one last lot from Park Avenue Liquor Shop, a magnificent Macallan.

We welcome your participation, and photography of all lots is available on request pre-sale.

Please note that lots containing distilled spirits may only be shipped within New York State, or picked up in person at our warehouse or at our Rockefeller offices.

SCOTCH WHISKY

Arguably the most celebrated and evocative spirit produced in the world today, Scotch whisky - or simply whisky to the Scots - has played an integral part in the formation and perception of the Scottish identity over many centuries. It is a product that the country is rightly proud of, and it is our great pleasure to offer a number of interesting and rare bottlings across the following pages. Offered at a variety of price points, the selection is suited for those new to collecting fine Scotch whisky, and to those who are on the look out for something exceptional. Whoever you may be, we'd be happy to raise a glass with you after the sale - Slàinte!

THE FOLLOWING LOT WAS CONSIGNED DIRECTLY FROM THE BOWMORE DISTILLERY

Lying off the West coast of Scotland, the island of Islay is a beautifully unspoilt land, rocky-edged and peat covered, and home to Islay single malt Scotch whisky. Islay is revered by connoisseurs across the world, and Bowmore is regarded by many as the best balanced of the Islay malts, characterized by its wonderfully rich and complex flavors.

One of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, Bowmore was established in 1779 by local merchant David Simson. A true pioneer, he built the distillery, distilled the whisky and introduced the new whisky to the world. The distillery was later taken over by James Mutter, then sold to John Sherriff of Campbeltown and became the Bowmore Distillery Company. In 1963, it was acquired by Stanley P. Morrison and although the distillery was substantially rebuilt, the original floor maltings and traditional whisky production methods were kept in place. The distillery is today owned by Morrison Bowmore Distillers.

Nestled on the shores of Loch Indaal, its close proximity to the sea is vital in determining the final character of Bowmore Scotch whisky, along with the traditional production methods handed down over generations. The distillery is one of only an ever decreasing handful that produce their own floor malted barley, and the barley is still laboriously hand turned by the Maltman. Bowmore is produced using water from the Laggan river which gathers the flavors of the rich Islay peat, and this same peat fires the malt drying kiln. The famous Bowmore Number 1 vaults are where the spirit spends nearly all its life resting quietly in damp cellars below sea level, battered by the waves of Loch Indaal - and the peat, barley, water, wood, people and tradition accumulate to create the subtle, warm and smoky character of Bowmore whisky.

THE 1964 TRILOGY

Christie's is delighted to offer the first 1964 Bowmore Trilogy at auction. A truly significant event for whisky collectors across the globe, the release of Gold Bowmore in the Fall of 2009 completes the Trilogy, with the Gold joining the Black (released in 2007), and the White (released in 2008).

In 1964, the Bowmore distillery began utilizing steam-powered stills rather than the original coal-fired units, which enabled more precise temperature control, and resulted in much smoother and more consistent spirits. It is from those stills that this particular trilogy was born, with each of the three colors (Black Bowmore, White Bowmore, and now Gold Bowmore) coming from the same year.

In 2007, just 827 bottles were produced of Black Bowmore which had been matured purely in Oloroso casks for an ebony color that was matched by aromas of exotic fruits, ginger, and cinnamon. White Bowmore followed in 2008 with only 732 bottles produced, and was characterized by maturation in Bourbon casks, and scents of melon, mango, and papaya. This year, Gold Bowmore joins the group, with only 701 bottles available worldwide. Gold Bowmore was placed in three Bourbon casks and one Oloroso sherry cask before being meticulously blended together. This precious expression quietly matured below sea level for 44 years in the Number 1 vault, allowing the namesake rich, gold color to develop, along with a balance of complex aromas and flavors including those of exotic fruits, creamy vanilla, and gentle peat smoke.
