Château d'Yquem--Vintage 1986
Sauternes, 1er grand cru classé
Levels: very top shoulder
"The 1980s was a great decade for sweet white Bordeaux as well as for the reds. Four vintages stand out: 1983, 1986, 1988, and 1989. Of these, the 1986 is 'supremely balanced and elegant. There is more botrytis than the passerill 1989, and more underlying ripeness than the 1983. Perhaps not as initially compelling as the 1988, the 1986 is none the less a wine for the ages, with decades of cellar potential before it. Today it is still showing some of the honeyed and tropical character of youth, a very fine botrytis note, and the beginning of petrol and mineral complexity, without approaching the carmel or toffee of maturity. On the palate the wine is clean, fresh, and elegant. Tremendous, intensely concentrated." CC, tasted Sept 2008
