Fuller Pilch, oil on canvas, [c. 1835], with sitter's name inscribed on verso, 485 x 375mm., walnut frame.
Fuller Pilch (1804-1870) is portrayed as a comparatively young man, wearing a top hat which, though fashionable, led to his dismissal "hat knocked on wicket" in a Gentlemen v Players match at Lord's in 1837. While his face is almost boyish, the portrait suggests his powerful build, great height and ablity to match the strongest bowling. Born in Norfolk, he became a star player for Kent and appears to be taking guard on a ground outside Canterbury. Provenance: Hal Cohen (in his sale, Phillips London, 26 January 1995, lot 123).
