FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM, PRESENTATION COPY SIGNED AS "MARK TWAIN" TO W.W. JACOBS, the English short story writer. Clemens's story, originally printed in Harper's Magazine, December 1907 and January 1908, had been written many years before but was considered too shocking to publish. Johnson pp. 91-92.
