A standing Saint, historiated initial B on a leaf from the Interpretation of Hebrew Names from a Bible, in Latin, ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
[southern France, c.1300]330 x 230mm. The initial on the verso. Three columns of 47 lines written in brown ink, capitals touched red, rubrics in red, four two-line penwork initials in blue flourished red and in red flourished purple, the text running from Asoth to Baarisontes (very slight marginal cockling, small marginal tear and loss at lower corner).

A handsome leaf from the second volume of a large two-volume bible once owned by Sir Thomas Phillipps (Ms 2506) and Sir Alfred Chester Beatty (Western MS 173). The volume was sold at the latter's sale, Sotheby's 24 June 1969 (lot 57, to Alan Thomas) and the leaves eventually dispersed by Duschnes, New York. Two inscriptions in the bound volume showed that it was in the possession of a religious house in Bordeaux by the 16th century; the style of the script suggests that it may indeed have originated from southern France.
