FIRST EDITION. UNOPENED COPY OF THE SHEETS in attractive morocco slipcase. John Pyke Hullah (1812-1884), who composed the music for this sentimental comic opera in two acts, had been a fellow student of Dickens's sister, Fanny, at the Royal Academy of Music. The dedicatee, John Pritt Harley, a popular comic actor and singer, played the lead part when the production opened at the St. James's Theatre, 6 December 1836. Even though it was produced afterwards, the publication date of this opera preceded The Strange Gentleman; it was never in any collected edition of the author's works. Eckel pp. 157-158; Gimbel A25.
