Square Hebrew type, woodcut printer's device on 28.4 (last 2 leaves torn with some loss affecting a few letters, some spotting), later vellum (text-block detached, label chipped, soiled). Provenance: Pusey House Library, Oxford (ink stamps to pastedowns, title and final leaf).
RARE FIRST EDITION of the first dictionary for the Targum, with a Latin introduction by Fagius. Levita, responsible for the first two Hebrew books printed at Rome, was instrumental in furthering the study of Hebrew in Christan circles. In publishing this and other Hebrew works with Levita's assistance, Fagius's reputation grew sufficiently to secure him the chair of Hebrew at Strassburg University in 1544.
