AN UNUSUAL BASKET-HILTED BACKSWORD; AND A VICTORIAN HIGHLAND OFFICER'S REGULATION BROADSWORD
SECOND QUARTER OF THE 18TH CENTURY AND LATE 19TH CENTURY
The first in heavily patinated condition, perhaps excavated, with broad blade double-edged towards the point and cut with three long fullers on both sides, basket-guard of Glasgow type but unusually constructed of flattened bars slotted to form very slender pairs of bars, with aperture for reins, later pommel and grip each in 'aged' condition, and an old collection tag inscribed 'Glen Lyon H4'; the second of 1865 pattern, the blade etched over its full length, the hilt retaining the original grip
The first 32¾in (83.2cm) blade (2)
