With 15 7/8in sighted barrel struck with Ordnance marks, the tang fitted with back-sight, variant regulation lock marked 'Tower' and 'GR' crowned, full stock, the butt formed with a slight cast and damaged by a ball strike, evidently within the carbine's early working life, regulation brass mounts of Paget type, the butt-plate marked 'I/H XV KLD', and stirrup ramrod

Lot Essay

An attached metal label records the tradition that this carbine was reputed to have saved the life of the Wicklow rebel Michael Dwyer, a ball having struck the butt and knocked the carbine from his hands. Dwyer surrendered to the British in 1803.
