Lot Essay

Delft theatrical tiles made at Liverpool c.1775 also celebrated popular actors in their starring roles of the season. These square tin-glazed earthenware tiles were used in domestic interiors for mantels and walls. For similar examples, see Anthony Ray, Liverpool Printed Tiles, London 1994, p. 55, figs. 1-36.
