Lot Essay

Carved panels of the late 16th and early 17th century are typically decorated with Biblical subject matter. The present panel is unusual as it draws inspiration from Greek mythology - namely the story of Perseus and Medusa. Here we see the moment where Phineas is turned to stone for looking at the head of the serpent-adorned Medusa.
