Lot Essay

A near identical chest was sold in The Clive Sherwood Collection, Sotheby's Olympia, 22 May 2002, Lot 74. Evidence of the same twin interior compartments was apparent, it was dated 1587 and bore the initials 'HW'. Additionally, the lid bore a coat of arms which were identified as Herbert Whitfield of Tenterden, Kent and the date commemorated his marriage. It is highly likely that this chest was made for the same family.
