The present chair was purchased by the Kings when they traveled to Paris in 1929 with architect/designer Philip Maher to refurnish their summer residence 'Rockledge' (designed by George W. Maher in 1912) with the contemporary modern aesthetic of the time. In addition to this chair by Mallet-Stevens, the interior included other modernist works by D.I.M., Donald Deskey, Hagenauer, Louis Sognot and others.
