This table appears to belong to a small group of furniture made to be easily assembled and dismantled for storage or portability. Other than a group of folding stools and horseshoe back chairs, one of which is included in the present sale (lot 1938), few other portable or travelling hardwood furniture pieces have survived and have been published to date. A portable recessed-leg table in the Dr. S.Y. Yip collection with easily removable trestle legs was sold at Christie's New York, The Dr. S.Y. Yip Collection of Fine and Important Classical Chinese Furniture, 20 September 2002, lot 59.
