A FINELY CAST GILT-SPLASHED BRONZE CENSER
LATE MING-EARLY QING DYNASTY, 17TH CENTURY

Of compressed globular form, raised on a straight circular foot, cast with a band of lotus petals, on the shoulder flanked by opposing-lion mask handles, the lotus petal band repeated encircling the base above the foot rim, all decorated with gilt splashes of varying sizes, the recessed base with an apocryphal Xuande mark, pierced wood cover
4 3/8 in. (16.2 cm.) across handles, pierced wood cover, wood stand, Japanese wood box
Provenance
The Kyo O collection, that of Mr. Ishiguro Tadaatsu (1884-1960), founder of the Tokyo University Medical School and the founder of the Red Cross in Japan, acquired by him in the 39th year of the Meiji period (1906)
