Note:
Wang Kangle, a native of Fenghua City, Zhejiang province, first learnt Western techniques of painting before studying Chinese painting when he was 20. He learnt from the great masters Huang Binhong, Zheng Wuchang and Zhang Daqian. After the establishment of the Republic, he taught landscape painting whilst working at the Shanghai Commercial Press Design Workshop from 1924 to 1932. After his retirement in 1972, Wang spent fourteen years traveling the world and recording famous landmarks. Wang's painting is imbued with the styles of his old teachers, from the intensity of ink to the use of colour. While staying faithful to tradition, still he was able to articulate his own "rich ink and heavy colour" style.
